Witch hazel is slightly acidic, and vinegar much more so, but either will work for soaking your jewelry. This cleaning method is intended for jewelry with sturdy stone settings (I wouldn’t use it for opals, pearls, or tanzanite, for example), and that is especially important to keep in mind if you’re using vinegar. Witch hazel is certainly the milder of the two, so use whichever ingredient you feel comfortable with.

I used Color Oops on my hair and forgot to remove my rings before rinsing. I looked at my hand to discover my BIG ring was yellow and black with a slight oil slick color in spots (rainbow). I immediately got upset and started to panic. I tried your recipe in a small tupperware lined with foil. IT WORKED!!!! My ring is back to the original three colors.

Ladies: I see a lot of you saying it didn’t work for you. I wonder if you’re trying to clean PLATED silver jewelry or silver-TONE jewelry? If it’s not actual silver (usually denoted by the piece being stamped somewhere in the metal with “.998”) your problem may be that your jewelry finish is wearing off, instead of it just being tarnished. Think of it as trying to clean a stain off a painted wall vs “cleaning” a section of that wall where the paint has been peeled off. You can’t wash paint back onto the wall if it’s peeled off, you have to repaint it. In the case of plated or silver toned jewelry, you’ll need that jewelry to be re-dipped into a silver plate or coating to restore its luster.
An old Jenga game is the perfect place to begin organizing your jewelry. If you don’t have an old Jenga set, you can pick them up for less than $10 and they make a really neat looking display for your necklaces. Paint or decorate the wooden blocks if you want and then just put them together, holding them in place with strong glue. Hang it on the wall and you have a really modern looking necklace holder that is as fun to make as it is functional to use and it will keep those necklaces from tangling in the jewelry box.

Okay… so I was unpacking and going through some of my jewelry … AND…. I found that all of my inexpensive jewelry that has been sitting in my jewelry box was tarnished and yucky and dirty! I forgot I even had some of it! So… I began a search for some kind of homemade jewelry cleaner so I didn’t have to go buy some! I stumbled upon this jewelry cleaner recipe using only boiling water and baking soda so I thought WTH I’ll try it…. AND…. It was like magic! Even my yucky, tarnished CTR ring that I LOVE was Sparkly clean and looked brand new! It made me very happy so I thought I’d share my find! Here’s the recipe below!
Taking an old cigar box and an old sweater, you can make a great ring holder that not only organizes your rings, it protects them as well. What you end up with is a ring display that looks a lot like what you see in the jewelry store, only a lot cheaper. This project is easy and only takes about an hour or so from start to finish. You end up with a place where you can slide your rings in to keep them from being lost or knocked around in the jewelry box. You could also use this to stick your stud earrings in and keep them from being misplaced.
A driftwood hanger is another lovely and very easy craft. The most important thing is finding a piece of driftwood or a fallen tree branch that has a shape and size that you find suitable for the project. Bring it home, clean it and decorate it with some tape and paint. Use some twine to hand it and add some screw-in hooks for the jewelry to hang from.
Embellished Resin Rings ~ These rings are similar to the resin rings I featured above but with a bit more bling and sophistication! I think I’d better go out and buy some Mod Podge Dimensional Magic stat.  I am in LOVE with these rings! 25.  Resin Ring Tutorial ~  This resin ring is a bit different in that it uses photos or photo paper for the design on the ring.  I love the idea of a photo ring! 26.  Fork Ring Jewelry Tutorial ~ There are so many fun uses for this great tutorial.  You could use this as a craft activity for a class or youth group.  Or you could also make a sentimental gift for a new bride or parent having an anniversary using one of their wedding silverware. 27.  DIY Girl’s Flower Ring ~ This craft is easy enough the kids could make one too!  Just get  your hands on some cute buttons, and turn them into these fun rings, with the band made from a stretchy headband.  I think this would be an especially cute gift for a young teen.
If the jewelry is very dirty or very tarnished – like silver or gold – then you may need to repeat the process so just add a little more baking soda and more boiling water – but make sure it’s boiling, that’s key!  You can also use a toothbrush to get in all the nooks and crannies of detailed jewelry. Be careful with precious gems, stones and metals.
