Over time, you may notice that your silver jewelry is looking tarnished and you have wondered how to clean a silver necklace or bracelet. Jewelry tarnishes because the sulfur that is present in the air creates a chemical reaction to the silver. This homemade silver cleaner is simple to make and won’t cost you a ton of money because most of the ingredients are ones you probably already have in your pantry.
I even cautiously tried the leftover solution on a costume jewellery pair of earrings (I DON’T recommend anyone else reading this to try this though as your jewellery could be very different quality to mine!) and it worked to remove the last bits of tarnish off the chain- already used baking soda on it before and most of it was shiny as new, but this last method completely removed everything else. My costume jewellery was made of very good metal and handiwork so the solution did not damage my jewellery. Thank you so much again for such invaluable tips and advice!

Read Before You Start!: Gather your ingredients and line your pan with a sheet of foil (shiny side up). Lay out your dirty jewelry and have each part of the jewelry touch the foil. Not sure why this is important, but apparently it is. (Note: I cleaned my silver, 14k white gold and even a diamond ring without any problems. I don’t recommend using this cleaner on stones like opals and pearls. Not sure what the reaction would be to these types of natural stones.)
I just used this to clean mine and my husband’s silver wedding bands. This stuff is great. Our bands were looking pretty dingy and we bought some professional silver cleaner and it made them look worse. I was horrified, but then I found this recipe, tried it, and had success. I cut the recipe in half since I was just cleaning two rings. It apparently didn’t change the cleaning power because they haven’t been this shiny in forever! Thanks for posting the recipe. Will use from now on!

Wood floor samples are around a quarter each at your local home improvement store. You can use a few of these to create a beautiful jewelry organizer that will hang on the wall. You need a collection of samples (or you could just use a board if that’s what you have on hand), wood glue, a few screws and something to hang it – Velcro picture strips work well. The screws (and you can buy decorative ones if you want) are what holds all those necklaces and keeps them from getting tangled. Just hang it in the bedroom or bathroom and you’ll always have your necklaces perfectly organized.
You can create an absolutely gorgeous jewelry display with a few cheap plastic plates and cups, some temporary tattoos and a few other supplies. The gist of this one is to make those cheap plates and cups look like vintage china, which is done with floral temporary tattoos. Once you have that accomplished, you can fill the cups with foam for sticking earrings and use command hooks or some decorate push pins on the plates to hold necklaces and bracelets. You really have to see this one. You’ll find it hard to believe that they started out as cheap plastic.

I need to try this on my grandmother’s sterling service that got willed to me. My Dad keeps asking me why I don’t set the table with it for holidays; I don’t want to tell him I’m afraid his mother’s silverware would give us all food poisoning…I have silver polish but I wince–and quickly find another chore to do–every time I think about having to stand there and individually polish an 80-piece sterling service set!

Here's a space-saving trick: Opt for an open-face box that you can mount right onto the wall. When a shadow box is unavailable, any well-chosen crate, bin, or orphaned drawer can be retrofitted with a variety of hooks and knobs, turning your earrings and chains into objets d'art. Small decorative bowls perched on the box's lower ledge corral rings, pins, and brooches and complete the charming trinket tableau.

When your favorite pieces of jewelry no longer sparkle, you can clean them at home with a simple jewelry cleaner with ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. Commercial cleaners can be a bit on the expensive side and are full of harsh chemicals that are harmful to the environment. The best natural jewelry cleaner costs pennies to make and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals.

I tried this and it worked great for some of my pieces (all are 925 silver from Tiffany) but one of my necklaces actually turned darker. Tried the solution two more times and left it to soak, tried to use a polishing cloth after the solution under running water and no change. So bizarre because it worked like magic on all my other silver. Thoughts?
When your favorite bling just doesn't have the same sparkle, instead of purchasing expensive cleaning solutions or bucking out for a professional scrubbing, try this easy DIY jewelry cleaner. Using ingredients you already have in your pantry, this concoction costs pennies to make and doesn't use any harsh chemicals — just the power of science. And you can give your old toothbrush a new life by gently scrubbing jewels postsoak. Before you know it, your special gems will be dazzling.

be careful with the white gold, most of it is plated with rhodium (a metal in the platinum family); white gold itself is dull, and this is done to make it shiny. I had a jeweller in the family, and got my original wedding band from him, many years ago. When he asked if I wanted it plated, I said no. I’m sure my face was a treat when I first saw it; it was immediately plated! This method of cleaning might remove the plating eventually. I’d check with a jeweller before doing it too often.
