hmm…just tried this for a very tarnished rope chain….didn’t work at all….i did use cider vinegar as it was all I had but followed exactly…smelled horrible! Was cider vinegar not good to use? I’m thinking that is why it smells so bad. Ugh…now to get this horrid smell out of my house! I’m bummed…going to try just boiling water and baking soda now and see if that works at all.
If you have a few pieces of chicken wire on hand, you can create an absolutely stunning hanger for your earrings and other jewelry. You’ll need a one-by-two foot piece of chicken wire as well as a few pieces of wood to build the frame. The framed holder hangs with a piece of ribbon or whatever you want to use to hang it and it costs only about $2 to make. Plus, it’s relatively easy and will hold loads of jewelry. Add a few small nails or hooks to the wooden part for holding necklaces and bracelets and your earrings will just hang across the wire in the center.
You can create an absolutely gorgeous jewelry display with a few cheap plastic plates and cups, some temporary tattoos and a few other supplies. The gist of this one is to make those cheap plates and cups look like vintage china, which is done with floral temporary tattoos. Once you have that accomplished, you can fill the cups with foam for sticking earrings and use command hooks or some decorate push pins on the plates to hold necklaces and bracelets. You really have to see this one. You’ll find it hard to believe that they started out as cheap plastic.

You can’t use anything else instead of baking soda. None of the other ingredients are necessary either… It’s specifically the vinegar (acetic acid) and the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) that react and cause the reaction and hence the bubbles. The water actually inactivates both significantly and the salt (sodium chloride) is totally inert in the presence of the acid and base. As a matter of fact, when you combine the acetic acid and sodium bicarb, you get water and salt. The foil also does nothing…you can use any dish.

If soaking the jewelry doesn’t clean the pieces well enough, you can use an old soft bristle toothbrush to get a more in-depth clean. Place the brush in the cleaner and gently tap around the mounting with the bristles of the brush. This should help remove any grime and dirt that may have built up in the crevices and around the mount. Dip the ring back in the solution to remove any loose dirt, rinse and place on the towel to dry.
