I used to make and sell a “purple jewelry cleaner” that was also amazing but only knew how to make it in 55 gallon drums! Was biodegradable and non-toxic! Anyway, the reason why these cleansers should never be used on Pearls, Opals and costume jewelry, is because they are considered soft stones, they have to be glued into their setting, rather than prong set. Most cleansers will destroy the glue, at least over time. Costume jewelry stones are also usually glued in rather than the labor intensive work of prong set, to keep cost down and make it more affordable. Costume jewelry is also made with “slag” metal or junk metal, definitely sub-standard and doesn’t usually hold up against cleansers either. They can turn ugly colors and sometimes, even soften the metals used in costume jewelry. I don’t claim to know everything about anything but I do know a lot about jewelry cleaners, having sold ours for 25 years all over the country.

Since I didn’t pay anything for them, and since they were useless to me in their present condition, I figured I’d try this.

You can literally make one of these in about five minutes and if you have the hoop and lace on hand, it won’t cost you anything. You could also use strips of fabric if that’s what you have.

I even cautiously tried the leftover solution on a costume jewellery pair of earrings (I DON’T recommend anyone else reading this to try this though as your jewellery could be very different quality to mine!) and it worked to remove the last bits of tarnish off the chain- already used baking soda on it before and most of it was shiny as new, but this last method completely removed everything else. My costume jewellery was made of very good metal and handiwork so the solution did not damage my jewellery. Thank you so much again for such invaluable tips and advice!

hmm…just tried this for a very tarnished rope chain….didn’t work at all….i did use cider vinegar as it was all I had but followed exactly…smelled horrible! Was cider vinegar not good to use? I’m thinking that is why it smells so bad. Ugh…now to get this horrid smell out of my house! I’m bummed…going to try just boiling water and baking soda now and see if that works at all.

I used the aluminum foil method many times for years. The first time that I tried it, I was SO amazed with the results, as I had some silver jewelry that I’d neglected for quite some time. It didn’t even appear to be “silver”. For the reason that I usually clean numerous pieces at one time, I tear the aluminum foil up into little pieces so each piece of jewelry will be in contact with the foil. I add very hot water, baking soda, and a few drops of dish detergent). I place in a bowl with a well sealing lid and shake gently for about 30 seconds, then let soak for 10-15 minutes. Using a soft bristle brush and the liquid, I gently scrub the jewelry. Last, I rinse and buff dry.
Pegboards are great for organizing just about anything and jewelry is certainly no exception. A piece of pegboard is really cheap and you can use it to create a beautiful jewelry organizer that will hold all of your necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets. Just frame the pegboard (if you want) and then add hooks, cups, small baskets, and anything else that you need to keep that jewelry organized. You can hang necklaces from hooks and use plastic cups or baskets to keep your rings organized. Really, there are so many ways that you can put a pegboard to work keeping things organized.

How about a necklace holder that has industrial flair? You could easily make one out of some copper pipe pieces and some copper end caps and fitting adapters. You’ll also need a piece of wood to use as a support for the whole thing. You can mix and match the pipes and fittings however you want so be creative and give it an interesting, geometric structure. Check out ehow for more details.

Over time, frequently-worn jewelry pieces will develop a grimy layer that can dim the brightest gemstone. The best way to keep jewelry clean is to take it to a jeweler for a professional cleaning. However, the most convenient, inexpensive and earth-friendly jewelry cleaning method is to make your own homemade cleaner from items as simple as water and dish soap.
